Rudra is the Vedic predecessor of Shiva, appearing prominently in the Rigveda and Atharvaveda. The Sri Rudram in the Yajurveda has 11 sections (Anuvaka), each dealing with a different aspect of Rudra. The Rudra Gayatri directly invokes this primordial force of cosmic dissolution and regeneration.
