Historical & Scriptural Significance
Ardhanarishvara (the half-female Lord) is one of the most profound philosophical concepts in Hinduism — representing the inseparability of Purusha (cosmic consciousness) and Prakriti (cosmic energy/matter). This form teaches that creation is impossible without the union of Shiva and Shakti. It is described in the Shiva Purana, Linga Purana, and Skanda Purana. The Ardhanarishvara Stotram by Adi Shankaracharya is the most celebrated text on this form.
