Meaning
I bow to Lord Rama. The name ‘Rama’ itself is the Taraka (liberating) mantra — it burns all sins (Ra) and ensures they do not return (Ma), ferrying the soul across the ocean of birth and death.
Word-by-Word Meaning
- राम (Rama) — From Sanskrit root ‘Ram’ = to delight in / to be filled with bliss
- र (Ra) — Removes sins by burning them (Rakat = fire element / Agni beeja)
- म (Ma) — Ensures sins do not return (Manam = water / Amrita beeja)
- तारक (Taraka) — That which ferries across (from Tara = to cross over / to be liberated)

Historical & Scriptural Significance
The Taraka Mantra holds a unique place in Hindu tradition as the mantra whispered by Lord Shiva into the ears of the dying at Kashi. This is described in the Shiva Purana and the Kashi Khanda of the Skanda Purana. Tulsidas (author of Ramcharitmanas) stated that Rama Nama contains the essence of all Vedas, the entire Vishnu Sahasranama, and all sacred texts.
